Long Covid Is Sidelining Millions Of Workers From Their Jobs

As the numbers of those suffering from COVID symptoms skyrocket, researchers and government officials are trying to understand just how much impact prolonged COVID is having on Americas labor force. One of the biggest mysteries about the pandemic, long-COVID symptoms, could be playing a massive role in missing millions of workers.

Now, millions may have been pushed out of work because of COVIDs long duration. Two separate studies found that between 23% and 28% of patients with long-term COVID are not working due to symptoms – that is about 1.1 million Americans are out of work due to long-term COVID. According to the Lancet study, 46% of long COVID patients, or 2.1 million workers, reduced their hours.

If a proportion of long COVID patients reduced their hours only one-fourth, this would raise the labour market effect to 1.6 million full-time-equivalent workers. If all of the hours reduced were added together for long-term Covid patients not working, it is an hourly equivalent of 1.6 million workers.

Workers disabled because of long COVID can be in any category, or in none; they can, for instance, be employed, but be taking unpaid sick time off work. However, a person with long Covid may not be looking for work at this time due to their medical limitations, and may have been looking for a job over the past year, as they may have been employed before becoming ill.
